This warm summer painting captures the Impressionist artist Claude Monet painting in his barge alongside his first wife, Camille Doncieux. During the summer of 1874 when this piece was created Manet and Monet visited each other and painted with some of their contemporaries such as Auguste Renoir. Many artists at the time who painted in an avant-garde style were close friends, and often showed together under the Impressionist, however Manet chose not to include himself among their exhibitions, opting instead to follow his own path in the Salons of Paris.
